BBC director general Mark Thompson was today fighting to defend the exorbitant £14.3million pay packages of 50 of his top 'fat controllers'.

Thompson, who is already under fire for the corporation's slow handling of the Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand phone scandal, desperately tried to explain the profligate spending on salaries.
